Boko Haram: Kidnapped Doron Baga Villagers Found In Chad
More disturbing details about a recent mass abduction from Doron Baga community in Borno state have emerged.
According to SaharaReporters, about 85 villagers, who have been kidnapped by suspected members of the dreaded Islamist Boko Haram sect, were transferred to an island in Lake Chad and spent a couple of days there. The development now has Chadian armed and security forced involved.
The information is grounded on the words of an undisclosed officer of the Nigerian Army, who confirmed on August 15, 2014, Friday that a group of Boko Haram hostages has been moved to the territory of Chad for their safety.
The official added that three out of six abductors were disguised as women. Chadian officials apprehended them. However, it was unclear whether these people would be transferred to the hands of Nigerian military operatives for questioning.
The source further explained how it was possible for terrorists to move Doron Baga villagers, captured during the raid, to the island.
Sect members had reportedly told Chadian officials, who are in charge of that territory that they were high-ranking Nigerian officials on a mission to transport the civilians and to protect them. Some of Boko Haram fighters have reportedly left the area by boats, shortly after brining their captives to the island.
However, the Chadians soon became suspicious. They decided to interview these displaced persons in order to learn more about them, their origin and destination.
A woman from Doron Baga found courage to tell Chadian officials the story of Sunday’s (August 10) attack on her lakeside village. Her details did not match with data provided by the so-called Nigerian officers. Soon more people spoke out, and currently both Nigerian and Chadian sides are in direct contact over the incident.
Boko Haram has intensified its kidnapping activities over the last week. In the latest development, about 50 boys were reportedly abducted from Dikwa town, central part of Borno State. This information emerged on August 15, 2014, and could not be immediately ascertained, as the information from these regions is slow to emerge and to be transferred.
According to eyewitnesses of Doron Baga raid, who fled the area, Boko Haram insurgents burned down multiple houses, a market and a school. The number of people who were unaccounted for was put at 97. Further investigation of this matter with the people stranded on the island of Lake Chad may clear the air on the situation.
